Saroona Haroon: The Sherlock Holmes of the Slide

Dr Saroona Haroon is a histopathologist at Sherwood Forest Hospitals and a self-described "detective of the microscope." In this conversation, she reveals the world behind the biopsies – the careful art of diagnosing disease from tiny tissue slices, the three-micron precision of lab work, and the deep satisfaction of solving diagnostic puzzles that directly help patients she'll never meet.

Saroona talks about growing up surrounded by microscopes and x-ray boxes in her grandfather's GP practice, following her mother into laboratory medicine, and finding her passion in dermatopathology. She shares how her faith guides her approach to work and life, the importance of halal income, and how she balances clinical excellence with raising a family.

This episode celebrates the heroes behind the scenes – the pathologists, biomedical scientists and lab teams whose meticulous work underpins diagnosis and treatment across the NHS. Saroona's infectious enthusiasm for her specialty reminds us why histopathology matters, even if most patients never see the people examining their slides.

A conversation about precision, purpose and the joy of work that genuinely fulfills.

Dr. Saroona Haroon is not only a brilliant histopathologist but truly a *rare kind of human being*—one whose precision in the lab is matched only by the purity of her heart. Listening to her speak about her work feels like entering the world of a real-life detective, someone who solves medical mysteries with accuracy, quiet dedication, and unwavering integrity. But beyond the microscope, I have known her in roles that are even more inspiring. As a teacher, she was—without any doubt—my favourite. Her ability to simplify complex concepts, to guide with patience, and to light the spark of curiosity in her students is extraordinary. As a mentor in the lab, she was exceptional: firm, focused, and always pushing students to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and halal earning. And as a humanitarian… she is nothing less than an angel. Always the first to step forward for a struggling student, a needy patients, or anyone who crossed her path with a genuine need. She embodies compassion in action, not just in words. Her influence on my life has been profound, because of her encouragement, her belief in me, and the way she became my ideal personality, I pursued my academic journey with passion and today, by Allah’s grace, I stand as a PhD doctor and biochemist. Her inspiration guided my path more than she may ever realize. Her journey reflects precision, purpose, and profound kindness. People like Dr. Saroona are the quiet pillars of our healthcare system: serving, uplifting, and inspiring without seeking recognition. I feel honoured to have learned from her, worked with her, and witnessed the beautiful sincerity with which she carries her duties. May she continue to shine, heal, teach, and inspire. The world truly needs more people like her. 🌟
